CAGE code

Also called: Commercial and Government Entity code, NCAGE

What is CAGE code?

A CAGE code (Commercial and Government Entity code) is a five-character identifier assigned to a contractor's facility at a specific location. US entities get one automatically through SAM.gov registration, and it is used on contracts, facility security clearances, payments and standard forms to identify where and who you are.

How CAGE codes work

The Defense Logistics Agency assigns and maintains CAGE codes. FAR subpart 4.18 covers their use in federal contracting. A company with several locations can hold several CAGE codes, one per facility, while having one UEI for the legal entity. Foreign entities use an NCAGE code obtained through their own country's system.

CAGE codes show up in proposals and on forms such as the SF 33 and SF 1449, in facility clearance records, and in the government's contracting databases.

Common mistakes

Problems usually come from changes: moving offices or changing the legal name without updating SAM.gov and the CAGE record, which can stall awards and payments. Validation of a new CAGE record can also take time, so register well before your first proposal is due.

Put the CAGE code on your capability statement and proposal cover pages; buyers and primes look for it.

For classified work the CAGE code also ties into the facility security clearance process run by the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, so changes to the facility's ownership, address or key management personnel need to be reported there as well. Keep a short internal record of every CAGE code the company holds, which address each belongs to, and which contracts use it, so finance, contracts and proposal staff all quote the right code.

CAGE code in ProposalWorkspace

ProposalWorkspace keeps the CAGE code with your other registrations in the company profile and fills it into standard forms directly from those records, with a review step before anything is saved.

CAGE code: questions and answers

How do I get a CAGE code?

US entities get one as part of registering in SAM.gov; the record is validated by the Defense Logistics Agency. You do not apply for it separately.

Can a company have more than one CAGE code?

Yes. A CAGE code identifies a facility, so a company with several locations can have several, under one UEI for the entity.
